Bwindi’s Four Trekking Sectors Compared: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park isn’t one trailhead — it’s four separate sectors, each with its own gorilla families, access roads, and lodges. Your permit is issued for a specific sector, so understanding the differences before you book matters more than most people realize.

Buhoma: the original and most accessible

Buhoma, in the north, was the first sector opened to tourism and remains the easiest to reach — roughly 8 hours by road from Kampala or a short flight to Kihihi or Kayonza airstrip. It has the widest range of established lodges, from budget to high-end, and generally gentler terrain than the southern sectors.

Ruhija: the quiet middle ground

Sitting at the highest altitude of the four sectors, Ruhija is known for cooler temperatures, birding (it borders the Mubwindi Swamp, a top spot for the elusive African green broadbill), and noticeably smaller crowds than Buhoma. Access roads have improved significantly, though it’s still a longer drive from Entebbe than Buhoma.

Rushaga: the most gorilla families

In the south, Rushaga has the highest concentration of habituated gorilla families of any sector and is also the primary location for Uganda’s gorilla habituation experience permits. It’s the standard gateway if you’re arriving via Kigali, roughly 4-5 hours by road, which makes it popular with travelers combining Uganda and Rwanda.

Nkuringo: the toughest hike, the best views

Nkuringo sits on a ridge with sweeping views into the Virunga volcanoes and is generally considered the most physically demanding sector — trails are steep both on the way in and, notoriously, on the way back out. It rewards trekkers who want a genuine wilderness feel and don’t mind the climb.

So which sector should you choose?

  • Shortest transfer from Entebbe: Buhoma
  • Best combined with a Rwanda itinerary: Rushaga or Nkuringo
  • Quietest trails and birding bonus: Ruhija
  • Fittest trekkers wanting a challenge and a view: Nkuringo
  • Best odds for a habituation experience permit: Rushaga

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose which sector I trek in?
Yes, sector is assigned at the time your permit is booked, so tell your operator your priorities — access, difficulty, or combining with Rwanda — before booking.

Which sector is best for older or less mobile travelers?
Buhoma generally has the gentlest terrain and the most lodge options at every comfort level.

Can I trek in more than one sector on the same trip?
Yes, some itineraries include treks on consecutive days in different sectors, though this adds driving time between them.

Do all sectors have the same gorilla sighting success rate?
Yes, all habituated families across all four sectors are tracked daily by rangers, so success rates are consistently high everywhere.
